Kokrobite, Ghana
The guide book explains this coastal town 45 minutes outside of Accra as a “laid back backpacker” town. That is one way to look at it. Another person described it as a soap opera where Rastas, NGO workers, travellers, business people, and volunteers together to chill at what is not the nicest beach in the area but does attract quite the crowd. It is quite accessible with bit of persistence.
Akosombo, Ghana
Akosombo is the southern portion of the Lake Volta region which is supposedly the world largest man made lake. The history of the lake is easily accessible as some of the highlights include 84,000 people relocated, 850,000 hectares of land flooded and stretches for 400km.
The Volta Lake Ferry offers a 36 hour ride across the lake with stops along the way. The boat taken cost about 7.5 Cedi for second class with two 1st class cabins also available. The return trip is supposedly longer and for tourist purposes, a round trip is not a common itinerary. The last stop is Yeji that has accommodations fo travellers that plan to continue and arrive at night. Getting from Yeji to Tamale is a common route but does require another river crossing.
Once in Tamale, travelling is fairly straight forward with direct bus service offered by STI to many points.
